Monday 12 Jul '04 -The meaning of liff

Koos heeft vaak last van het koffie-apparaat. Het ding doet precies dát was Koos wil dat 'ie niet doet. Maar voor dat koffie-apparaat-zelfdenkend-gedrag is natuurlijk geen woord, alhoewel... Douglas Adams en John Lloyd schreven 'the meaning of liff', en zo leren we dat Koos ruzie heeft met de uttoxeter.

In Life, there are many hundreds of common experiences, feelings, situations and even objects which we all know and recognize, but for which no words exist. On the other hand, the world is littererd with thousands of spare words which spend their time doing nothing but loafing about on signposts pointing at places. Our job, as wee see it, is to get these words dow off the signposts and into the mouths of babes and sucklings and so on, where they can start earning their keep in everyday conversation and make a more positive contribution to society

Herkenbaarheid troef bij het lezen van 'the meaning of liff' maar koude rillingen liepen over mijn rug bij het zien van de volgende:
SNITTERFIELD (n.)
Office noticeboard on which snitters (q.v.),cards saying 'You don't have to be mad to work here, but if you are it helps !!!' and slightly smutty postcards from Ibiza get pinned up by snitterbies (q.v.)

Ik kijk schuin voor me en zie het prikbord van collega Leo (van radio 10 gold) met daarop de woorden 'je hoeft niet echt idioot te zijn om hier te werken... maar het helpt!' op A4-formaat (nog net niet in comic sans, maar het had gekund) met een jolig word-clipartje. En vlak daaronder... een vakantiekaartje uit Tirol.  Koude rillingen... brrr.

Ik heb wel ooit ‘The deeper meaning of Liff’ gelezen. Met onder andere de Yebra. (a cross between a zebra and anything that fancies a zebra)

Oughterby Koosiby koopt idd liever groot in, na luttele incidenten waarbij het snoepautomaat tot danspartner werd verheven. Even schudden (eerst om je heen kijken), kassa.
PS vervang het woordje ‘wil’ in de eerste zin aub even in ‘denkt’ of ‘vreest’... zo lijkt het net mijn schuld!
